Countries that supported India for permanent membership in the United Nations

India has been demanding permanent membership of the UN Security Council for decades. United Kingdom, France and the United States have supported the country in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. As a result, three of the five permanent members of the Security Council are now on India’s side.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has spoken in favor of giving India full membership in the UN Security Council. Starmer supported India’s claim in his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday.

A few days ago, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke in favor of India’s demand. NDTV reported this information on Friday.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Starmer said that the Security Council “must increase the representation of more countries”.

Currently, the Security Council has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member states. Temporary members are elected from their respective regions for two-year terms.

The permanent members are – Russia, United Kingdom, China, France and the United States. Permanent members can veto any decision of the Security Council.

French President Emmanuel Macron made a strong case for India’s permanent membership in the Security Council on Wednesday.

He said, as long as the door of the Security Council remains closed and each side only protects its own interests, we will face obstacles to move forward. Let’s make the UN more effective. The primary initiative in this regard should be to make it more inclusive. For this reason, France is in favor of expanding the scope of the Security Council.

Last week, Joe Biden also spoke on behalf of India. In a meeting with Narendra Modi in Washington, Biden said he wants to reform the United Nations Security Council. He wants to see India’s participation in various important global organizations including the Security Council increase.

New Delhi claims that the 15-nation council formed in 1945 is not enough to meet the needs of the era. This organization does not reflect the geopolitical reality of the 21st century.

Turkish President Erdogan also called for reform of the United Nations, saying the current system ignores the 10 non-permanent members and gives the five permanent members the power to make all decisions, which is the demand of the changing times.

He has said earlier that the world is bigger than these five countries.

On the other hand, last Sunday, the UN Secretary General called the 15-member Security Council “obsolete” and said that the authority of this body is decreasing.

António Guterres commented that the world body will lose all credibility in the near future if it does not reform its membership and procedures.
