India considers Sheikh Hasina a former Prime Minister
India considers Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country in the face of student uprisings, as the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this in response to a question at the ministry’s weekly briefing on Thursday.
Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have already said from here that she (Sheikh Hasina) is a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. So this is our position on this matter.”
After Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election on Tuesday, the Awami League issued a statement congratulating him. In the statement, Sheikh Hasina was referred to as the ‘Prime Minister of Bangladesh’. A journalist raised this issue and asked whether India considers Sheikh Hasina a former Prime Minister or a Prime Minister in exile. In response, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated the Indian government’s position.
Sheikh Hasina left Ganabhaban on August 5 in the face of student uprisings. She has been in New Delhi since then. However, the Indian government has not said anything about the status in which he has been placed.
