Male: President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed discussions with the Indian Ambassador to the Maldives regarding the withdrawal of Indian troops and expressed confidence in achieving this goal through diplomatic consultation.

In an interview with the state media, Dr. Muizzu said the Indian troops could be sent back in consultation with the neighboring country.

“I have met the Indian Ambassador twice during this transition period, and we have had a lot of talks. We have had very peaceful and constructive talks. Hopefully, this will be achieved,” Muizzu said.

Dr. Muizzu reiterated his stance against the prolonged stay of foreign troops for any purpose. The president-elect said the Maldivian people decided they did not want foreign troops in the country. While this decision is not limited to the Indian army, Muizzu said it is being talked about because its troops are currently present in the Maldives.

Acknowledging India’s consistent assistance to the Maldives, Muizzu emphasized the close ties between the two nations. He said while India remains a valuable ally, his priority will always be the well-being and interests of the Maldives.
