Mumbai drowned in heavy rain, 4 people died

Normal public life in India’s commercial city Mumbai has been disrupted since Wednesday evening. 4 deaths were reported due to heavy rains.

More than 200 mm of rain fell at several places in Mumbai from 5 pm to 10 pm on Wednesday.

According to the municipality, there has been 234 mm of rain in Pawai, 259 mm in Ghatkopar, 276 mm in Mankhurd. Which is the highest rainfall record during this period. Apart from the death toll, this heavy rain has caused waterlogging at several places in Mumbai, disrupted traffic, disruption of train (Central Rail) services, though Western Railway services are normal, air traffic has also been temporarily affected, 14 flights have been diverted. A landslide occurred in Mumbai’s Mumbra Bypass Road area.

Fire service officer Swapneel Sarnbath said that due to rain, large stones from the hills came down on the road. We got the news of the incident around 9:30 pm on Wednesday. However, there are no reports of casualties in the incident yet. However, traffic has been disrupted.

Just three hours of rain in Pune broke the 86-year-old record. Shivaji Nagar received 131 mm of rain on Wednesday. And most of them happened between 2.30 pm and 5 pm – in a span of just three hours. According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, the amount of rain may reach 132.3 mm on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Wednesday. A red alert has been issued in Mumbai, Raigarh and Thane till 8:30 am on Thursday. Rain, gusty winds are forecast with heavy thunderstorms throughout the day on Thursday.

A holiday has been declared in all educational institutions including schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Palghar, Pimpri-Chinchwar areas due to red alert. Pedestrians had to get stuck for hours due to water logging on roads and railway lines. Residents have been informed by the Mumbai Police that they should not go out of the house unless absolutely necessary.
