At least 11 people have died after heavy rains inundated many low-lying areas of Delhi, India. The country’s meteorological office has issued an orange alert as heavy rains are likely to hit the city again. News from NDTV.
Delhi received record-breaking rain on Friday. On this day, 228.1 mm rainfall was recorded in the city. This is the highest rainfall in a single day in June since 1936.
Delhiites have been told to brace for heavy rains again before the damage from these rains is over. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy rains in the city on Sunday and Monday.
According to India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) colour-based warning system, the orange alert urges people to be prepared for heavy rains.
IMD meteorologist Soma Sen told national media NDTV that the monsoon is approaching, heavy rains are likely to occur in several parts of North India.
According to the report, many of the dead include children, who drowned by falling into various water-logged pits. Three people died when a wall collapsed in Vasant Vihar area of the city. A cab driver waiting for a passenger died after part of a canopy collapsed at the Delhi airport.
Apart from this, massive traffic jams and chaos are created in different areas of the city due to flooding. The city’s vital underpass was closed after the Pragati Maidan tunnel was flooded. The underpass was also closed on Saturday.
Meteorologists said that during the monsoon, Delhi receives an average of 650 mm of rain, but this time, a third of it fell in the first day.
