17 killed in stone mine collapse in India

At least 17 people were killed when a stone quarry collapsed in Aizawl district of Mizoram state in India due to heavy rains. Many others are also trapped there.

NDTV reported this information in a report on Tuesday (May 28).

According to the report, the mine collapse occurred as a result of heavy rains under the influence of Cyclone Remal. The operation to rescue the trapped people has started.

Director General of Police Anil Shukla said, “All efforts are being made to rescue those trapped under the rubble.” However, due to heavy rain, rescue operations are being disrupted.

Local officials said all schools in the area have been closed and government officials have been ordered to work from home. Besides, several important highways and roads are blocked due to landslides.

Officials also said that Aizawl’s communication with the rest of the country is closed due to a landslide in a part of the national highway.

State Chief Minister Lalduhoma held an emergency meeting to review the situation.

Cyclone Remal hit West Bengal on Sunday (May 26) night local time. After the overnight storm, Remal’s strength decreased a lot on Monday, but the rain continued throughout the day with gusty winds. According to the latest reports, at least six people have died in West Bengal due to Remal.
