20 convicts escaped from prison in Pakistan

At least 20 convicts escaped after breaking out of a prison in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Besides, one person was killed in the ‘crossfire’ while escaping.

The incident took place at Poonch District Jail in Rawalakot, about 110 kilometers (67 miles) south of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

TRT World reported this information in a report on Sunday (June 30) quoting news agency AFP.

Badr Munir, an official of the regional interior ministry, said on Sunday, “The prisoners had a revolver. They held a sentry hostage with it.’

Munir also said, “It is not yet clear whether they seized this revolver from the prison officials or brought it from outside.”

Inspector General of Prisons Kashmir Waheed Ali Geelani said, “A total of 20 people have escaped from the prison. One person was killed in the crossfire. And there are 19 fugitives.

A senior local police official named Riyaz Mughal said, “The police have blocked the entry and exit points of Rawalakot. And the operation is going on to find the absconding accused.
