Heavy rains, floods and landslides have reported six deaths in India’s northeastern state of Sikkim. The situation is particularly dire in the northern part of the state, where floods and heavy landslides have occurred. Besides, more than 1500 tourists are stuck there.
According to the Indian news media Indian Express, due to landslides, communication with other areas including Lachung, Lachen in Mangan district, famous for tourism, has been cut off. The Sangkalang bridge collapsed, cutting off communication with Mangan, Junggu and Chungthang. As a result, tourists are in trouble.
Many roads have been closed due to landslides. Several houses were flooded or damaged and power poles were also swept away. Mobile network services were also affected in North Sikkim.
Mangan District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chhetri said three people each died in Pakshep and Ambithang villages. He ordered rescue and relief work to be carried out after meeting with other officials to review the situation. The District Magistrate also said that a relief camp has been set up at Pakshep for the displaced.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is monitoring the disaster situation. He asked the administration, police and officials of various departments to take immediate steps for rescue work. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Sikkim for the next few days. As a result, the disaster situation is expected to continue for several more days.
