9 bridges collapsed in Bihar in 15 days

Incidents of bridge disasters continue in India’s eastern state of Bihar. At least three more bridges collapsed in Siwan and Saran districts of the state on Wednesday. With this, a total of 9 bridges collapsed in the state in the last 15 days. However, there was no loss of life in the accident. NDTV reported this information in a report on Thursday (July 4).

Local authorities said that the bridges that collapsed last Wednesday were between 30 and 80 years old. Bihar has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days. In this situation, the bridges have collapsed.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that four bridges collapsed in Bihar in one day. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did not take any drastic action.

In such a situation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the state’s Road Construction Department (RCD) and Rural Works Department (RWD) to conduct a survey of all the old bridges in the state and immediately identify the bridges that need repair.

WRD Additional Chief Secretary Chaitanya Prasad said in a statement that parts of the bridges/causeways that collapsed in Siwan and Saran on Wednesday were very old. These structures do not seem to have been built following the required standards. It also seems that the foundations of the bridges were not deep enough, as these structures were damaged during floods.

According to the police, the local administration is continuing the investigation of the incident of the bridge disaster.

Local people believe that the heavy rains of the last few days may have caused the collapse of these small bridges. Basically, in the last 15 days, more than 10 cases of bridge collapse have been reported from different parts of this Indian state.
