From hugs to dinner Putin-Modi, what the US said

India’s friendship with Russia, which has invaded Ukraine, is no longer a secret. New Delhi is in tension with Washington over this. But in the meantime, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on a visit to Moscow after forming the government in the third phase. America has expressed concern about the matter.

Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin after arriving in Moscow on Monday. Putin hugged Modi at the meeting of the two heads of state.

Elections were held in both countries this year. Russia’s Putin won by a huge margin. And Modi has been able to form the government for a record third time in India. This was the first meeting between Modi and Putin after his re-election. The Indian Prime Minister also attended the royal dinner at the Russian President’s residence yesterday.

Meanwhile, the United States has expressed concern over such friendship between Modi and Putin. When asked about Modi’s visit to Russia, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “We will keep an eye on what Narendra Modi is saying during his visit to Russia. However, we would like to inform that Washington has already expressed its concerns to Delhi about Russia’s friendship with India.

Miller also said on this day, “America hopes that when India or any country has relations with Russia, they remind Moscow to abide by the UN Charter.”

According to Hindustan Times report, Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022. For the past two years, Washington has been increasing pressure on India’s relations with Russia. However, India did not bow down to American pressure. On the contrary, India has been buying fuel oil from Russia at low prices for the last two years. Delhi is making huge profits by refining the oil in India and exporting it to America and Europe.

Meanwhile, Delhi has objected to the US intervention citing India’s historical relations with Russia. At the same time, India has refrained from voting against Russia in various resolutions at the United Nations. However, Delhi has repeatedly called for a peaceful end to the war in Ukraine through negotiations.

In the midst of this situation, Modi visited Russia again after three years. After the meeting with Putin, the Indian Prime Minister posted that picture on his X handle. During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold lengthy discussions with Vladimir Putin to review bilateral relations and develop a roadmap for future cooperation.
