Imran's party is getting reserved seats in Pakistan's parliament

Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is eligible to get 23 reserved seats in the country’s parliament, the country’s Supreme Court has declared. The Supreme Court of Pakistan announced this in an order on Friday.

The PTI leaders participated in the elections as independent candidates as they did not get the party symbol in the last February 8 parliamentary elections. Despite winning the most number of seats in the Parliament, the Election Commission of the country said that they will not get the reserved seats in the Parliament. They claim that 70 seats are reserved only for political parties.

Later, the leaders of the imprisoned Imran Khan’s party approached the High Court. Imran Khan’s team finally won after a long legal battle over the issue. This made them stronger in the parliament. As a result, Shahbaz Sharif’s coalition government is going to come under more pressure.

Incidentally, the number of seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan is 336. According to the Election Act, 60 of these are reserved for women and 10 for non-Muslim minorities.
