Teesta Dam hydroelectric power station collapsed in Sikkim due to severe landslide
The Teesta Dam hydroelectric power plant has collapsed in Sikkim, India. The landslide occurred in the area of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Teesta Stage 5 Dam power station on Tuesday (August 20) morning.
Initially, it was reported that the landslide occurred due to heavy rains. However, no casualty has been reported in this incident so far. However, several houses near the dam were destroyed in the landslide.
According to the report of Indian media NDTV, the 510 MW power plant was located on the side of a hill. The mountain was in danger of collapsing for the past few days due to small landslides.
A large part of the mountain collapsed on Tuesday morning. As everyone was evacuated from the power plant in advance, there were no casualties in the landslide.
Geologists say such incidents are likely to occur in the future as the problem of land erosion is increasing in this region of Sikkim.
It should be noted that in October 2023, Lonak glacial lake in Sikkim burst. Since then this power station of Teesta Dam was closed.
