10 Pakistani policemen shot dead on border

Ten policemen were shot dead at a checkpoint in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border. Seven others were wounded in the incident.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack on Friday.

A senior intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the gunfire in the area lasted for about an hour. Ten people were killed and seven others were wounded.

It is reported that about 20-25 militants launched a sudden attack on a check post of the Frontier Constabulary, a police support force, in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Pakistan’s southwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The casualties later occurred.

Meanwhile, in a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group said the attack was in revenge for the killing of its senior leader Ustad Qureshi.

Incidentally, the Pakistani army said in a statement on Thursday that nine people, including two suicide bombers, were killed in an operation in the Bajaur district bordering Afghanistan. Qureshi was one of them.
