Afghan diplomat resigns over gold smuggling allegations

Zakia Wardak, the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai, has resigned on charges of smuggling 25 kg of gold worth around Tk 23 crore from Dubai to India.

It is known that he was India’s senior Afghan diplomat. Zakia has claimed this diplomatic incident as a ‘personal attack and defamation’ against her.

He said, being the only woman diplomat in Afghanistan, this conspiracy has been made against her.

In the last week of April, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Zakia Wardak along with gold at the Mumbai airport.

According to reports, the gold has been seized and a case has been registered. But he was not arrested. Because he is under diplomatic immunity.

Zakia was appointed during the Ashraf Ghani government in Afghanistan. Later in 2021, the Taliban government came to power in the country. India still works with diplomats appointed by the Ghani government.
