Bangladesh has been elected as a full member of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for the next period of 2024-27.
Bangladesh has gained the membership of the organization’s governing body unopposed in the elections held at the 112th International Labor Conference in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday. This information was revealed in a notification sent from the Geneva Permanent Mission.
The Governing Body of the International Labor Organization’s Governing Body and Policy-Making Forum has 28 membership seats for governments, of which 10 are reserved for countries with high industrial importance. 177 countries of the ILO compete for the remaining 18 official memberships.
With only one membership allocated to seven countries in South-Central Asia, membership elections in the region are usually fiercely contested. However, in this year’s election, Bangladesh has raised its name as the only candidate through diplomatic efforts and compromise with other aspirant countries. A total of four countries from Asia and the Pacific region have been elected members of the ILO.
Previously, Bangladesh was elected as a member of the governing body of the organization for the period 1996-99 and 2008-11. By gaining this membership, Bangladesh is expected to have the opportunity to make an effective contribution to the organization’s policy making and management and to strengthen the relationship with the organization’s tripartite partners.
