Bangladesh votes against Israel at the United Nations

The UN Human Rights Council has passed a resolution against the occupying Israel. 28 countries, including Bangladesh, voted against Israel in this proposal on Friday. Al-Jazeera news

The resolution was about holding Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Palestinian-occupied Gaza Strip.

In addition, this proposal has demanded to stop the supply of all types of weapons to Israel. Because the Israeli army is carrying out genocide in Gaza.

Bangladesh, which has always been pro-Palestinian, voted in favor of the proposal and against Israel. However, six countries voted against the resolution and in favor of Israel, and 13 countries abstained from voting.

Voting for the resolution and against Israel were Bangladesh, Algeria, Belgium, Brazil, Burundi, Chile, China, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Qatar, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, Malawi, Paraguay and the United States voted against the resolution and in favor of Israel.

Abstaining from voting were Albania, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, France, Georgia, India, Japan, Lithuania, Montenegro, Netherlands and Romania.

Mark Wayne Jones, assistant professor of Middle East Studies at Qatar’s Hamad Bin Khalifa University, said the proposal to hold Israel accountable for war crimes is very important. But he also said that in reality it does not have much effect.

The professor told Al Jazeera, “Symbolically, the proposal is very important. This is the first time that the United Nations Human Rights Commission has taken this position.

The British media BBC reported that many European countries supported the proposal to hold Israel accountable and not provide them with weapons. However, at the beginning of the war, most of the European countries sided with Israel.

Among them Finland, Luxembourg and Belgium voted directly against Israel and France abstained. That is, Paris also supported it.

Since only six countries on the Human Rights Council voted for Israel. That is why Israel is adopting the strategy in the Gaza war. There will be pressure on them to change that.
