China to build heliport on Arunachal border

China is building a new heliport near the border of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India. It is being built 20 kilometers east of the Line of Actual Control of both countries, Indian media NDTV reported on Wednesday.

It is believed that Beijing is building the helicopter port to allow the Chinese army to reach the disputed border area quickly in case of emergency. If this happens, it is feared that the Indian government will face new pressure on Arunachal.

According to the report, China has been claiming Arunachal Pradesh as a part of South Tibet for a long time. As a result, this action by Beijing in the disputed border area may put new pressure on the Indian government over Arunachal. The construction of a Chinese heliport on the Arunachal border has been captured in satellite images.

The heliport is being built in the Ningchi area on the banks of the Gongrigabu Chu River in the Tibet Autonomous Region. That area falls within the territory of China. But the way China is breathing down India’s neck is increasing Delhi’s anxiety.

Analysis of satellite images and data showed that there were no structures in the area until December 1, 2023. Suddenly, the construction of the heliport has started there. The Dec. 31 photo shows the site being cleared for construction. Then on Sept. 16, satellite images from Maxar Technologies showed that construction had progressed far.

The under construction heliport has a 600 meter long runway. Helicopters will take off from there, which is compatible with high mountain areas. Heavy equipment can also move there. At least three hangars were also seen at the heliport. There is also an air traffic control service and several buildings with an apron area.

Geospatial intelligence expert Damien Simon first brought up the issue of the Chinese heliport construction. He said that once the heliport is constructed, the Chinese army will be able to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance and rescue operations in the region.

Due to the dense forests and rugged mountains in the region, it was difficult to transport military supplies. But once this heliport is in place, it will allow rapid deployment of troops to remote areas, strengthen patrolling capabilities and strengthen China’s overall military footprint in strategically important and remote locations.

An Indian Army source told media outlet NDTV that they are keeping an eye on China’s movements. They said they are aware of the construction of a heliport in China.
