Kallakurichi district is about 250 km southwest of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Most of the dead and sick are residents of Karunapuram area of ​​the district.

It is learned that four suspected illegal liquor sellers and 10 others, including a person named K Govindaraj alias Kannukutty, have been arrested for selling the poisonous brew Arak. 200 liters of illegal “packet arak” was seized from Kannukutty. The Madras High Court is going to hear the petition to take action against the responsible authorities.

Confirming that the death was due to consumption of poisoned liquor, a senior police officer told NDTV, “We are investigating what exactly they consumed.”

It is reported that the state government has sacked the district police chief and appointed a new officer in his place after the incident. The District Collector has also been transferred. Besides this, the deputy superintendent, three inspectors and several sub-inspectors of the Prohibition Enforcement Wing have been dismissed.

Many people die every year in India after drinking toxic liquor made by illegal distilleries. Illegal traders often add methanol to increase the strength of the alcohol. which is mainly used as an antifreeze and is very toxic. Even small amounts of methanol can cause blindness, liver damage, and death.
