Notably, Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral, Technical and Economic Cooperation or ‘Multisectoral, Technical and Economic Cooperation Initiative in the Bay of Bengal Region’ in short BIMSTEC is a regional alliance consisting of seven countries in South and Southeast Asia. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are members of this alliance created in 1997.

On September 13, 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated BIMSTEC headquarters in Dhaka. The main objective of BIMSTEC is to create an area of ​​mutual cooperation in technical and economic fields between the countries of South and Southeast Asia and the Bay of Bengal. Business, investment, technology, tourism, human resource development, agricultural development, fisheries, communication system, garment and leather industry and many other areas are covered by BIMSTEC.
