Former IGP of Bangladesh Benazir's property Croce orders

The court ordered to attach the property of former IGP Benazir Ahmed. In view of ACC’s application, on Thursday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Assam Jaghlul Hossain ordered the seizure of his assets of 83 documents in Gopalganj.

Incidentally, a recently published national daily claims that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and former Director General of RAB Benazir Ahmed have found a large amount of illegal assets. Since then, this former IGP of police has been in the discussion a lot.

The national daily published a report titled ‘Aladdin’s Lamp in Benazir’s House’ which detailed his various financial assets. Benazir’s vast assets include an elite and spectacular tourist center called Savannah Eco Resort in Sahapur Union of Gopalganj. Also, at least six companies in different parts of the country were found in the name of his wife and two daughters. The amount of investment in five institutions may exceed Rs 500 crore.

The report also claimed that Benazir Ahmed has expensive flats, houses and bigha after bigha of land in Dhaka’s elite areas. Best Holdings and five-star hotel La Meridien have 200,000 shares in the name of the two daughters. In Purbachal, there is a duplex house spread over 40 kathas with an estimated value of at least Tk 45 crores. There is another 10 bighas of land worth 22 crores in the same area.

However, in the last 34 years and seven months of long service life, Benazir Ahmed’s salary and allowances are supposed to be 1 crore 84 lakh 89 thousand 200 taka.

Barrister Syed Syedul Haque Sumon wrote to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the allegations against Benazir Ahmed. It is said in the letter, former Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Benazir Ahmed retired on September 30, 2022 after serving for 34 years and 7 months. After retirement, Benazir Ahmed’s wife and daughters have huge assets in their names, which are disproportionate to his income.

Barrister Sumon said in the letter that there are sufficient reasons to believe that Benazir Ahmed has misused his position and acquired the properties mentioned in the report compared to his income. In such a situation, former Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Benazir Ahmed, his wife, elder daughter and younger daughter, requested the ACC to investigate and take necessary legal action for amassing huge amounts of illegal wealth.
