The Islamabad High Court suspended the 14-year prison sentence of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case. The court decided to suspend the sentence on Monday. Imran’s wife Bushra Bibi’s sentence has also been suspended. Dawn’s news
Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Amer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb ordered the suspension of the verdict in the hearing of Imran’s appeal.
Barrister Ali Zafar was Imran’s lawyer in the court. At that time, Pakistan Accountability Bureau prosecutor Amjad Parvez was present in the court.
The former prime minister has been in jail since August last year in multiple cases. On January 31, an anti-corruption court in Islamabad sentenced Imran and Bushra Bibi. The verdict was announced just days before the country’s general elections. According to the verdict, Imran and Bushra Bibi were banned from holding public office for ten years and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 787 million each.
A day later, both were sentenced to seven years in prison. This ruling was given because they got married before the end of Iddat.
Earlier, a special court set up under the State Secrets Act sentenced Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who served as foreign minister in his cabinet, to 10 years in jail for violating state secrets.
In December, a new case was filed against Imran and Bushra for keeping a jewelery set as a state gift. The case was filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in an accountability court of the country. They received the jewelry set as a gift from Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during Imran’s tenure.
