'India is a superpower, we Pakistanis are begging'

Pakistan’s leading right-wing Islamic leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman compared himself with India and said, we two countries became independent on the same day; But India is a superpower and we are begging.

Rehman said this while giving a speech in the National Assembly on Monday (April 29). At that time, he supported the long-time rival Imran Khan’s PTI and said they have the right to hold rallies.

In Parliament, Rehman supported the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, saying the opposition has the right to hold rallies and even form the government.

Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) faction chief Rehman criticized the government in his fiery speech in the National Assembly, alleging election rigging.

PTI’s right to rally. We objected to the rigging of the 2018 elections and we object to the February 8 elections as well.

Rehman said, ‘PTI leader Asad Qaiser demanded the right to hold a party rally. Asad Qaiser’s claim is correct and PTI’s right to rally.

Rehman urged the ruling coalition of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and Pakistan Peoples Party to allow the PTI to form the government.

He said, you leave the power. Come here and sit (on the opposition bench), and let PTI form the government if they want.

At that time, Rehman expressed disappointment with the role of bureaucracy in elections and running the country. He said that institutions and bureaucracy had no role in achieving the country. He also complained that the election held on February 8 was not fair.

Rehman also talked about neighboring India in his speech in Parliament. Said, just compare India and ourselves. We both got independence on the same day. But today they (India) dream of becoming a superpower and we are begging to avoid bankruptcy.

He said that decisions are made by someone else but politicians are blamed for the problem.

Rehman lamented the failure to implement the recommendations of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) stressing the importance of upholding Islamic principles. He said, ‘We got the country in the name of Islam, but today we have become a secular state. Since 1973, not a single recommendation of the CII has been implemented. How can we be an Islamic country?’

He also said in the parliament that Pakistan is begging the International Monetary Fund to avoid bankruptcy.
