Indian diplomats under Canadian surveillance, Delhi’s explosive allegations
Justin Trudeau’s country recently pointed the finger at Indian Home Minister Amit Shah over the attack on pro-Khalistan separatists in Canada. In response, Delhi summoned the Canadian High Commissioner on Saturday and strongly protested against Canada’s allegations against Amit Shah.
This information was given today by Indian Foreign Ministry sources. Along with this, India has also made explosive allegations that Canada is keeping Indian diplomats under surveillance through audio and video.
In this regard, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Saturday, “In view of the recent allegations by Canada, we have just summoned the Canadian High Commissioner. In a note, it was stated that the Indian government has strongly protested against the unreasonable and baseless reference made by (Canada’s) Deputy Minister David Morrison before the committee regarding the Union Home Minister of India.”
The allegation first came to light in the US newspaper Washington Post. They allege that a ‘top Indian official’ gave permission to collect information about Khalistani separatists in Canada and carry out attacks on them.
The Washington Post reported that a Canadian source claimed that Amit Shah was the ‘top official’.
Morrison later said that he was the source for the Washington Post. Morrison said that a journalist called me and asked if this was the person being talked about. I said, ‘Yes, that’s him.’
The whole matter has brought India’s relations with Canada to a new low.
Meanwhile, Delhi has made explosive claims of wiretapping of Indian diplomats. On behalf of Delhi, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Canadian government is conducting audio and video surveillance on some Indian consular officers.
He said that their communications are being intercepted. We have formally lodged a protest with the Canadian government. Because we consider these actions to be a clear violation of relevant diplomatic and consular conventions. The Canadian government cannot justify such incidents of harassment and intimidation on technical grounds.
At the same time, he alleged, our diplomatic and consular staff are already working in an environment of extremism and violence. This action by the Canadian government is exacerbating the situation and is not consistent with established diplomatic norms and practices.
