India's new army chief is Upendra Dwivedi

Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi is the next Army Chief of India. The country’s Ministry of Defense made the announcement on Tuesday (June 11). He will take charge on June 30. News from NDTV.

According to the report, Dwivedi currently holds the post of Vice Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army.

The current General Manoj C Pandey will retire on June 30. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will replace him on that day.

Lieutenant General Dwivedi was born in 1964. On 15 December 1984, he was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. During his 40 years of service, he has served in various important positions. Dwivedi was in command of 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment, 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps DIG.

Dwivedi held important posts including Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024 before being appointed as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army as Lieutenant General.

After studying at Sainik School Rewa, National Defense College and US Army War College, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi did courses from DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Muteo. He was awarded a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ in the NDC equivalent course at the US Army War College, Carlyle.

Apart from this, Dwivedi holds an MPhil in Officer Defense and Management Studies, two Masters in Strategic Studies and Military Science. He has also been awarded three GOC-in-C commendation cards.

India’s current army chief General Manoj Pandey was scheduled to retire last May. But his tenure was extended for one month. He was appointed as the Army Chief on 30 April 2022.
