India's new foreign secretary is Vikram Mishri

‘China-expert’ Vikram Mishri has taken over as India’s new foreign secretary. He was appointed as India’s foreign secretary on Monday.

And through this, Vikram Mishra replaced Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. Before his new appointment, he was serving as deputy to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

He was also appointed as the Ambassador of India in Beijing.

Vikram Mishri is a 1989 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Office. He also served as the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary.

Earlier, the new foreign secretary was appointed as the Indian ambassador in Beijing from 2019 to 2021. During that period, there was a clash between Indian and Chinese forces at Galwan. He played an important role in trying to normalize the situation by contacting the Chinese government.

Vikram Mishri has the rare achievement of serving as the private secretary to three Prime Ministers of India. He was the personal secretary of IK Gujral from 1997 to 1988. Then he was Manmohan Singh’s personal secretary from 2012 to 2014. The diplomat later served as Modi’s personal secretary for a brief period from May to July 2014.

Apart from China, Vikram Mishri has been appointed as Indian Ambassador to Spain, Myanmar. He also worked in the Indian Embassy in Pakistan. From 2000 to 2003, this diplomat was the Charge d’Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Islamabad.

Born on November 7, 1964 in Srinagar, Vikram spent his childhood in the valley. He studied in a school in Srinagar. Later he completed his schooling in Udhampur and Gwalior. After doing MBA from Jamshedpur XLRI, he joined the Indian Foreign Office.
