Kejriwal in custody for another 14 days

A Delhi court sent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to 14 more days in jail.

Judge Sunena Sharma granted the jail custody subject to the application of the CBI on Saturday.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in Delhi’s ‘liquor policy’ case. The CBI is currently investigating the case.

On June 26, the Aam Aadmi Party chief was arrested by CBI from the court in the same case. They also took him into custody for three days. Kejriwal was produced before the court on Saturday after the custody period ended. Along with this, CBI applied to take custody for another 14 days in this case. The court ordered to grant their application.

According to the order of Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court, the Chief Minister of Delhi will have to stay in Tihar Jail till July 12. After the custody period ends, Kejriwal will be produced in the court through video conference from the jail by 2 pm that day.

The CBI told a special bench of Justice Sunena Sharma that Kejriwal needs to be kept in custody for a few more days in the interest of progress in the investigation and true justice.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation alleged that during the three days in their custody, Kejriwal did not cooperate with the investigation, instead deliberately avoiding questions. He even contradicted the evidence.

After hearing in the afternoon, the court took time and sent Kejriwal to jail custody by announcing the verdict in the afternoon.

Earlier on March 21, ED arrested Kejriwal in Delhi’s ‘liquor policy’ corruption case. As he did not resign from the post of Chief Minister at that time, he became the first Chief Minister in the history of India, who was arrested while in office.

After that, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail for a few days during the recent Lok Sabha polls. After the expiry of that bail, Kejriwal went to Tihar Jail and surrendered on June 2. After the Delhi court granted bail to Kejriwal last week, the ED filed an appeal against him in the Delhi High Court. Bail was suspended there. Later CBI arrested him again.
