Male: President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced numerous initiatives that the government plans to undertake to spread the knowledge of Quran and to promote Islam.

Speaking at last night’s closing ceremony of the 36th National Quran Competition, the President expressed his joy at seeing the development of skill in reciting the Quran in the country.

He highlighted that his administrations core priority is towards promoting Islam and its principles, and to spread knowledge of the Quran.

President Muizzu stated that his administration would provided additional facilities and training to those becoming Hafiz (a person who has memorized the Quran). Special incentives will be introduced to encourage more persons to attain the rank of Hafiz, including doubling the allowance they receive at present.

He also announced that free Quran classes will be commenced across the country.

The President went on to assure that the government would allocate land for the reconstruction of the National Centre for the Holy Quran.

He added that the government aims to develop two additional Waqf facilities, ‘Daarul Salam’ and ‘Daarul Arqam’ to help fund the promotion of spreading knowledge of the Quran.

President Muizzu spoke of how traditionally Maldivians had always given precedence to introducing the study of Quran to children at a young age, later sending them to ‘Edhuruge’ or a Quran teacher to develop their skills, and completing the Quran at least once before a certain age is reached.

He opined that studying the Quran would present a solution to all the behavioural issues currently faced in the country. He advised that the people should return to the book and abide by the divine instructions included therein.
