Maldives President urge stricter measures to curb speeding

Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called all relevant state bodies to initiate legal reforms aimed at introducing stricter measures against speeding and illegal racing.

President Muizzu’s urgence comes following the deadly accident in Hulhumale’ that claimed the life of a 23-year-old local man, Hussain Samah.

In a message of condolence shared on X, President Muizzu had prayed to grant patience to the victim’s family. He urged for the support of everyone in curtailing dangerous accidents.

“This government assures the public that it intends to do everything, and take stricter measures in ensuring the roads of Male’ area and the entire Maldives are safe places for everyone and curtail speeding and illegal racing,” President Muizzu said in his message.

He instructed all relevant authorities to begin efforts for legal reforms to ensure stricter measures against all culpable parties of speeding and illegal racing across the Maldives.

The victim, Samah, passed away during Friday early hours. He had traveled from K. Maafushi to attend this year’s Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race.

He passed away at Hulhumale’ Hospital amid treatment.

Police revealed the identity of the car driver, identified as Mohamed Wisham Sidhqee, 26, from Addu City Hithadhoo.

While the incident involves a deadly crash involving a race car, the public has already begun expressing their concerns regarding the reckless driving from racing cars in Greater Male’ area and across Maldives.

A similar incident was reported on Wednesday evening, which resulted in a car crashing into a motorbike. The victim, who is reportedly in critical condition, is receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital’s (IGMH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The public have already begun calling for stricter measures against reckless drivers and riders as well as for speeding.
