West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is angry with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Terming it a ‘plan to sell Bengal’, Mamata’s party, the Trinamool Congress, said it would not be allowed to do anything that shuns the state and harms its interests.

According to Anandabazar news, the Trinamool Congress has said that the state government is also a party to the Farakka-Ganga agreement. But the state government has not been informed about the renewal. Which is very bad. It has also been said that the money owed to the state government for this contract is also outstanding. Ganga dredging work has stopped. which has become the primary cause of floods and erosion in Bengal.

In 1996 India-Bangladesh signed an agreement on Ganga water. Several state governments are also involved in it. The contract will expire in 2026. Recalling that, Trinamool says that in 2017, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also opposed the Farakka Dam. He said, flood cannot be controlled by embankment.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi in 2022 about the Ganges breach in parts of Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia. Referring to that letter, Trinamool said that two years ago, Mamata also said that a large area of ​​Bengal is facing erosion because of the Farakka barrage. As a result of which people’s habitat is going away, so is the damage to the cultivation.

The Teesta water-sharing agreement was recalled with some caution from the ruling party in West Bengal. It has been said that according to the constitution, the Center has the right to sign agreements with other countries on any matter. But the Center also needs to understand that if the state government does not cooperate, deals like Teesta water distribution stand still. After the state government’s stand on Teesta water distribution, the center has also agreed that they will not do anything by avoiding Bengal.

Meanwhile, India’s first session after the 18th Lok Sabha elections begins tomorrow, Monday (June 24). This time, the Congress-led India Alliance is going to sit in the seat of the strong opposition party. An important partner of this alliance is Mamata’s party Trinamool Congress. The party is going to the Lok Sabha with 29 MPs. They have already indicated that they will move to Parliament on the issue of the Farakka Agreement. The issue is likely to get heated early in the Lok Sabha session.
