Mamata's 'provocative' statement about the Ganga after destroying the Teesta agreement

After the Teesta, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke harshly about the loss of West Bengal due to water going to Bangladesh through the Farakka Barrage. Standing at the party election meeting in Malda on Wednesday (May 1) afternoon, he mentioned that the farmers of West Bengal are suffering due to water going to Bangladesh. At the time, Mamata ordered the local legislators to start a movement for compensation, even if they did not directly oppose the agreement.

Although Bangladesh-India agreed at the Prime Ministerial level, Bangladesh’s rights to the much-anticipated Teesta Agreement have not seen the light of day in the face of objections from the Mamata-led West Bengal government.

Congress-led UPA government then Prime Minister. Even after the final announcement to accompany Manmohan Singh on Dhaka tour, Mamata was bent on saying that the state would suffer.

Not only that, later speaking at many political meetings, Mamata also threatened that Teesta Agreement will not be allowed in any way.

But this time, Mamata’s eyes are on the historic water agreement of the Ganga? Because, on Wednesday afternoon, Mamata raised the tone against the central government of the country at the election meeting in Farakka, Malda. Although not directly opposed to the agreement, local farmers are experiencing irrigation difficulties due to water passing through the Farakka Barrage; He ordered to start a movement for this.

Mamata said, “The Center did not pay 700 crores of compensation and did not do dredging either.” There should be a movement about it. I will say, the local legislators should move.

He also said that on December 12, 1996, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and late West Bengal Chief Minister Jyotibsu jointly signed the historic Ganga water distribution agreement. The contract is said to be renewed every 20 years. As such, there are only two years left before the renewal of the contract.

Many people think that Mamata’s provocative speech about the Farakka Barrage in the election meeting in Malda raised big questions about the future of this agreement.

In the northern districts of West Bengal, Mamata’s party, the Trinamool, is heavily dominated. However, the BJP has shared that dominance in the last assembly. Mamata said publicly not to allow the Teesta agreement in the 2021 elections. But this time, without saying anything on the Teesta Treaty issue in the Lok Sabha election campaign, Farakka opened his mouth about the barrage.
