Muijju announced the punishment against the conspirators to overthrow the government

Maldivian President Mohamed Mooijju has accused the opposition of attempting a ‘financial coup’. At the same time, he announced to bring to justice all those who are behind the conspiracy to topple the government.

Citing the local media of Maldives, The Indian Express reported that last week, the Central Bank of Maldives (BML) announced the suspension of foreign transactions from debit and credit cards. The news spread, Maldives reserves are running out of usable dollar reserves. In such an atmosphere fear spread among the people.

Suspension of international transactions means that the country has no reserves. It stopped the import and export of the country starting from foreign investment. Such a situation happened in Sri Lanka in 2022.

However, after a few hours, the central bank of Maldives withdrew the decision to suspend foreign transactions from debit and credit cards.

Muijju claimed that the opposition is trying to bring financial disaster to the Maldives by taking various decisions without consulting the government. The central bank took such a decision without consulting him. He ordered to withdraw this decision immediately after knowing.

It is known that the central bank of Maldives has only four directors appointed by the government. On the other hand, there are five directors outside the government. As a result, the government does not have monopoly influence or majority in the bank.

In this regard, the Minister of Finance of Maldives, Mohammad Saeed, complained and said, “Certain individuals are making deliberate efforts to disrupt the country’s financial situation.”

However, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party of Maldives, dismissed such allegations of the ruling party. Chairman of the party Faiz Ismail said, “If there is a coup, it will be from within the government and the government will be responsible for it.” The opposition has no hand in this.
