Three-time BJP MP Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India

He was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time in a row on Wednesday (June 26).

According to reports, K Suresh was the All India candidate against BJP-led alliance NDA candidate Om Birla. Voting starts today at 11 am local time. Birla got the majority in the vote. He got the support of 297 members. On the other hand, K Suresh of Congress got the support of 232 members.

He was elected Speaker for the next five years. Birla was felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.

While praising Om Birla, Modi said, ‘Your work is inspiring. You have worked in human services in Kota. Health services have been delivered from village to village. Benefited poor people with blankets and umbrellas. You inspire in sports. History was made in the 17th Lok Sabha under your leadership.

On the other hand, the opposition demands that the speaker should be neutral and uphold the constitution.
