PNC: President’s policies will pave way for a new chapter of democracy
Main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) states the reformative actions in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration and his comprehensive policies will pave the way to commence a new chapter in the history of Maldivian democracy.
The party made the remark in a statement released on the occasion of International Day of Democracy on Sunday which commended President Muizzu’s efforts to uphold democracy.
It was noted in the statement that crucial constitutional and administrative reforms remain pending as over 16 years have passed since the introduction of a multi-party system in the Maldives.
PNC said President Muizzu has commenced efforts to bring these reforms. Some of these efforts highlighted in the statement include:
- Limiting the number of parliamentarians to eliminate increasing the number of parliamentarians with each election
- Reforming the system to hold major elections together
- Ensuring there are no foreign soldiers in the Maldives to ensure its sovereignty
- Introducing and implementing Maldives first policy to ensure national decisions are made by prioritizing national interest
- Ending influence on the judiciary and independent institutions to ensure they function independently
- Paving way for local councils to earn revenue and be financially stable to strengthen the decentralization system
PNC said these efforts will strengthen Maldives’ democracy in the long term and would positively transform the government’s functioning.
In their statement, the party also commended President Muizzu for setting an example in his conduct by ending the longstanding cycle of revenge personal grudges, hatred and jealousy that has in the political system.
