Policy to allow recipients to forfeit land to apply for flat
Male: President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today that under a new policy, individuals who received land under the previous administration’s Binveriya housing scheme can apply for flats, provided the land plot is forfeited.
Speaking at the weekly press conference held this morning, President Muizzu said that there are people in financial hardship who have received land plots from Gulhi Falhu and GIraavaru Falhu. Due to this, such persons are unable to develop houses on their land plots, and have appealed for alternative assistance, he said.
Many of these individuals are seeking to give up the received land plots and instead apply for flats being issued under social housing, he added.
“There are many people who have received land plots individually, not as joint ownership. Even in joint ownership, there are very financially disadvantaged recipients. As it will take a long time for such persons to develop buildings on these plots, many citizens are requesting that some opportunity be presented where they can forfeit the land and apply for the flats currently under development,” the President said.
He announced that the government has decided to grant this request.
In the case of joint ownership, if one recipient decides to forfeit the land, it will then be divided equally amongst the remaining recipients, he said.
The President noted that while flats are convenient and come ready for occupation, land plots carry with it the requirement to develop buildings there, and in light of the current status, it will take time before adequate facilities are provided in Gulhi Falhu and Giraavaru Falhu.
“This means that through forfeiting land received in the Male’ area, individuals can now apply for flats,” he stated.
The President said that work is underway now to facilitate application submission via the portal for such applicants. This would be achieved in the next two weeks, and Binveriya land recipients can choose to forfeit their land and apply for flats, the President said.
Applications under this administration’s ‘Boahiyaavahikan Enmenah’ [Housing for All] program can be submitted until 11:59pm on April 30. Applications for flats and land plots must be submitted via the Boahiyaavahikan portal.
Under the first phase of the program, 15,000 land plots in the Greater Male’ area and Rasmale’, as well as 7,900 three-bedroom flats in Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’ will be given out. Registered Male’ residents and those residing in Male’ for a minimum of 15 consecutive years are eligible for this program.
The government has also allowed Hiyaa flat recipients to forfeit their units and instead apply under the new housing scheme, saying the change aims to support families whose current Hiyaa apartments no longer meet their needs as their households grow.
