PTI president Gowhar Khan and other activists were detained
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s party leaders and several lawmakers have been arrested by the police. The police and Imran’s party PTI said that they were arrested in several rounds of raids in Islamabad. Al Jazeera news.
On Tuesday (September 10), a police spokesperson said that four people have been arrested so far. However, PTI claimed that 13 people have been arrested. The party also said that they were picked up from different places in the capital Islamabad. Besides, some people have been detained from outside the parliament.
On Sunday (September 8), PTI organized a large rally to demand the release of 71-year-old former cricketer and politician Imran Khan from prison. After this rally, Islamabad police started raids in different places of capital Islamabad. Imran is in jail for more than a year.
The operation began on Monday (September 9) night. At that time PTI president Gauhar Khan was also arrested by the police.
Media footage showed police pushing detained lawmakers into cars outside parliament. The leader of the opposition Omar Ayub Khan called this incident “disgusting”.
Another PTI leader, Zulfikar Bukhari, wrote in an X post that yesterday’s mass protests sent shivers down the government’s spine. He also referred to the detention of activists as illegal.
Meanwhile, apart from party chairman Gauhar Khan, senior leaders Shoaib Shaheen and Sher Afzal Marwat were also among those arrested.
In 2022, Imran Khan was removed from the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan after a no-confidence motion against him.
