Ending all speculations, Rahul Gandhi, one of the leading leaders of the Indian National Congress, is finally the main opposition leader in the 18th Lok Sabha in India. Party General Secretary KC Benugopal said this. News from NDTV.

In a report on Tuesday night, this Indian media reported that Rahul Gandhi is the main opposition leader in the 18th Lok Sabha. General Secretary KC Benugopal said on Tuesday night.

He said that CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written to Speaker Protem Bhartrihari Mahtab and informed about the decision to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. Apart from this, other office bearers will be decided later.

Basically, on Wednesday, India’s 18th Lok Sabha will vote between the opposition and the ruling coalition for the post of Speaker. This decision came a few hours before.

Meanwhile, before announcing the decision, Rahul attended a meeting with All India Lok Sabha leaders at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharg’s residence in Delhi. In that meeting, it was decided to appoint him as the Chief Opposition Leader of the Lok Sabha.

The Congress regained the position of the main opposition party in the Lok Sabha after two decades with Rahul Gandhi moving to the post of Leader of the Opposition. In the 2014 elections, the Congress won only 44 seats when it was ousted. And in 2019 won 52 seats. Both these times Congress was the second largest party in Parliament after BJP. But the party could not fulfill the criteria to get the status of the main opposition party in the parliament.

As per rules, a party with less than 10 percent seats in the Lok Sabha does not get the status of the main opposition party or the post of leader of the opposition party. Congress won 99 seats in 2024.
