Rainfall in Mumbai: Red alert issued

Police advised Mumbai residents to stay indoors till 8:30 am on Friday (July 26) after the India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rain in the coastal city. The police advisory came after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Mumbai.

In a post on social media X, the Mumbai Police said the IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai till 8.30 am on Friday. All Mumbai residents are requested to stay indoors unless essential. Please stay safe. Dial 100, 112 in case of emergency.

Eleven flights have already been canceled and 10 diverted to airports around Mumbai due to heavy rains.

The rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday was 44 mm in Mumbai city, 90 mm in eastern suburbs and 89 mm in western suburbs.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde observed the situation and called the Raigarh Collector to help the flood-affected people.

Meanwhile, the traffic at Tamhini Ghat on Raigarh-Pune route was stopped after the landslide.

Shinde told news agency ANI that water has accumulated on roads and people’s houses in Pune. Khadkwasla Dam and surrounding areas are receiving heavy rains. District collectors, municipal commissioners and police commissioners are on alert.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed and the army’s airlifting teams have been asked to be ready.

On Thursday (July 25), the three cities of Pune, Palghar and Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra experienced floods due to heavy rains. Six people have died in Pune so far.
