Colombo, Sept. 3 (Daily Mirror) – Claiming that it is a tragedy that a handful of police officers are involved in spreading drugs in the country, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today stressed that such police officers will be removed from the police service.

Speaking at the 159th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police, the President urged the police officers who are involved in spreading drugs to get rid of old practices or else volunteer to vacate the police profession.

He said if such police officers are reluctant to leave the police service, they will be removed.

“I have discussed it with the IGP,” he said.

The President said it is the responsibility of the police to eradicate drugs in the country and that it is a tragedy that the police officers are involved in spreading drugs.

He said politicians in the past have interfered and crippled investigations into certain crimes and assured that this government will not interfere in police investigations.

The President said there have been political interferences behind all unresolved crimes and that even when the police attempted to investigate into certain crimes, politicians had crippled the investigations.

He said politicians had tracked down on the investigators and had taken revenge in the past.
