Sri Lanka allocates 7 mln USD to modernize postal service

COLOMBO, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) — The Sri Lankan government has allocated 2.08 billion rupees (about 7 million U.S. dollars) to modernize the country’s postal service, a minister said Monday.
Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, speaking at a ceremony in Colombo where 731 individuals were recruited to the postal service, said the funds would be used to upgrade facilities and introduce new technologies.
Of the total allocation, about 200 million rupees (about 670,000 dollars) would be spent on purchasing new trucks, vans, laptops, and desktop computers, he said, adding that another 600 million rupees (about 2 million dollars) would go toward new construction projects.
Jayatissa added that the government plans to recruit an additional 3,000 individuals to the department soon.
