Sri Lanka apologized to Muslims for burning corpses during the Corona crisis

The Sri Lankan government has apologized to Muslims for ordering mandatory cremation during the corona epidemic. The apology was announced in a statement on Tuesday.

During the Corona period, the World Health Organization said that it is safe to bury the dead in the Muslim manner. However, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s administration ordered the cremation of Muslim bodies at that time. The Sri Lankan government has been criticized by the United Nations and international human rights organizations for this move. Later in 2021, during the visit of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan government stopped the policy of compulsory cremation.

In a book published this month, Gotabaya has also vindicated himself in this regard. He said, on the advice of experts, the body was ordered to be cremated.

Muslims are the minority in Sri Lanka. According to Islam, the dead are buried facing Mecca. On the other hand, Buddhists and Hindus are cremated.

Muslim Council of Sri Lanka Hilmi Ahmed told AFP news agency, “We will now file a case against two academics – Meththika Bithanege and Channa Jayasumana.” They then forced the bodies to be burnt. We will now also seek compensation.
