Terrible landslide in Nepal: 55 people still missing after three days

Two passenger buses plunged into the Trishuli River in Nepal due to recent heavy rains and landslides. At least 63 people went missing in this accident. Three days after the incident, no trace of 55 people has been found yet. The chances of survival of the missing are almost non-existent.

On Monday (July 15), a senior Nepali police officer reported this information to Reuters.

Friday’s landslide in central Chitwan district, about 86 km west of the capital Kathmandu, toppled vehicles over a concrete road divider and plunged at least 30 meters down the road, according to news agency NDTV. Dozens of rescuers have been searching the Trishuli River for hours. But till now 55 passengers could not be rescued.

According to preliminary information, there were 63 passengers including the driver in the two buses.

Chief District Officer of Chitwan Indradev Yadav told ANI that the buses were thrown off the road and fell into the river below when the landslide hit the highway.

Incidentally, fatal accidents often occur in Nepal due to poorly constructed roads, lack of maintenance and reckless driving. According to official figures, nearly 2,400 people have lost their lives in Nepal in the year since April. In January, 12 people were killed and 24 injured when a bus from Nepalganj to Kathmandu fell into a river. Road travel becomes dangerous during the monsoon season as rainfall causes landslides and floods across the hilly country.
