The decision to cancel the jobs of 26,000 teachers and workers in West Bengal is suspended

The Supreme Court of the country has given an interim stay on the verdict of Calcutta High Court of India in which about 26 thousand teachers and education workers of West Bengal were about to lose their jobs. This suspension will remain in force till the next hearing date i.e. July 16.

The Calcutta High Court also ordered teachers who were illegally employed to be refunded their salary for the entire period of service with 12 percent interest. Although the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked not to immediately refund the salary of the teachers who were employed illegally, the apex court said in its judgment that if it is proved in the future, someone got the job despite being ineligible, then he will have to refund the salary.

Apart from this, the Supreme Court also directed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should complete the investigation of the entire corruption within three months.

Some of the teachers who lost their jobs were on hunger strike for six days at Shaheed Minar in Kolkata demanding their jobs back. They broke their hunger strike in the evening after the Supreme Court verdict.

According to the Calcutta High Court verdict, all those teachers who lost their jobs participated in the job process in 2016. Former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and former top education officials of the state are now in jail after being accused of job corruption.
