Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan is serving time in prison in several cases including smuggling of secret information of the country. With which there is tension in the country. In this situation, the spokesperson of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Stephen Dujarric, expressed hope for a positive solution to the Imran Khan issue.
When asked about the Imran Khan issue during the daily press briefing on Tuesday, he said, “We [UN Secretary General] want to see the current political situation, we want the current situation of Mr. Imran Khan to be resolved in a more positive way.”
Imran Khan has been in jail since August last year. He was convicted in some cases before a national election in February. Recently, the court suspended Imran Khan’s imprisonment in two cases related to illegal acquisition and sale of state gifts. Also overturned his conviction on charges of leaking state secrets. In this regard, however, PTI’s unique politicians have always been saying that Imran Khan has been kept in jail for political reasons to make their party fail.
A Geneva-based UN group on arbitrary detention in Pakistan said, “An appropriate remedy would be Mr Khan’s immediate release and an effective right to compensation and other reparations in accordance with international law.”
Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazir Tara, however, rejected the UN report. He called Khan’s arrest and the cases against him an “internal matter” of Pakistan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in this regard, the Law Minister said, “The founder of PTI has all rights according to the country’s constitution, laws and international standards.” The former prime minister is in jail as a convicted prisoner. And as an independent state, the constitution and existing laws are enforced by the courts of Pakistan.’
