The United States has warned its citizens against traveling to Jammu-Kashmir, Manipur
The United States has issued special travel warnings for US citizens to several places in India, including the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur. Citizens of the country have been advised not to travel to those places.
The US has already warned its citizens not to travel to several parts of India due to security concerns. The newly updated alert covers the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur. In Jammu and Kashmir, security forces often clash with independent armed groups. On the other hand, the northeastern state of Manipur is still troubled by communal riots.
India’s ruling BJP is trying hard to make India a safe haven for foreign travelers. The Modi government was dealt a major blow by the US administration’s special warning on Jammu-Kashmir and Manipur. Not only that, the White House has warned its citizens to avoid traveling within at least 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border.
Do not travel to Kashmir (except eastern Ladakh and Leh) due to terrorism and civil society unrest, states the US Department of Homeland Security guidance. There is a possibility of armed conflict within 10 km of the border. US citizens are also advised not to travel to Central and Eastern India due to terrorism and Manipur due to violence and crime.’
India is generally placed on the Label 2 list in terms of travel risks. However, the United States has placed Jammu and Kashmir, the Indo-Pak border, Manipur and parts of central and eastern India on the Level 4 list. In addition, the northeastern states of the country, known as the Seven Sisters, have been placed in the Level 3 list. These include – Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.
In a warning to travel-hungry citizens, the US guidelines also said, ‘One of the growing crimes in India is rape. Violent crimes such as sexual assault often occur in tourist destinations and other areas. Criminals can attack without warning. They can target tourist places, transport stations, markets, shopping malls.
