Trinamool claims that the proposal of 'statehood' in West Bengal is unconstitutional

The state BJP has proposed to consider North Bengal, which consists of seven districts in the northern part of West Bengal, as part of North East India.

West Bengal BJP President and Balurghat Parliament Union Minister Sukant Majumdar made this proposal after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. The ruling Trinamool Congress sees this proposal as a ‘state partition’ plot.

Not only that, Mamata Banerjee’s party sees this kind of thinking as unconstitutional. In 2011, Trinamool came to power in West Bengal by defeating CPM. Since then, the Trinamool has consistently won the Lok Sabha, Assembly and municipal elections. In the last Lok Sabha elections, BJP failed to defeat Trinamool in the polls despite its best efforts. Administratively, therefore, the central ruling party at the center of power is desperate to weaken West Bengal.

Trinamool leader Sukhendushekhar Roy said, “Today (yesterday), Union Minister of State Sukant Majumdar met the Prime Minister on the state partition proposal. There he demanded that the eight districts of North Bengal should be linked with North East India. This claim is against the constitution. He has taken an oath as a minister to abide by the constitution. However, the eight districts proposed by Sukant are an integral part of West Bengal.

There have been demands for separate states in various parts of India. BJP has raised this demand several times in West Bengal. The Trinamool feels that the central government should focus on other regions before thinking about West Bengal.

Sukhendushekhar also said, “If the central government accepts this demand of Sukant Majumder, then it should first look at states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.” Those states have been demanding separate states for a long time. So they should think about Bengal after considering them first.

North Bengal is an important geographical region of West Bengal. Uttar Bengal consists of seven districts in the northern part of the state. West Bengal is divided into North Bengal and South Bengal for historical reasons. The districts of North Bengal are Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, South Dinajpur, Darjeeling and Maldah.
