United States praises Bangladeshi media for investigative reporting

The United States has supported investigative reporting by Bangladeshi media and journalists. Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) issued a statement to be cautious in publishing the news following the recent reports on the corruption of some officials including former IGP Benazir Ahmed. When asked about the position of the United States on this matter, the spokesperson of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, spoke in support of the independent role of media and media workers in Bangladesh.

Recently, a series of investigative reports on former and current members of the Bangladesh Police were published in the media. Bangladesh Police Service Association-BPSA issued a statement claiming these to be partial and intentional. It is urged to be more cautious in publishing the report.

Editors Guild Bangladesh and Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association CRAB protested expressing concern over BPSA’s statement. This time, the United States expressed its position on the media issue of Bangladesh.

Spokesman Matthew Miller was asked about the BPSA’s statement at the US State Department’s regular press briefing on Monday (June 24). At this time, he expressed the support of the United States to the investigative reports of the media and journalists of Bangladesh.

“We strongly support the role of a free and independent media in maintaining effective democratic institutions and promoting transparency in government,” said Matthew Miller. We object to any attempt to harass or intimidate journalists to prevent them from carrying out important work.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that the United States has full support for the investigative work of Bangladeshi journalists.

Mathew Miller was also asked about the Hasina-Modi bilateral meeting on the issue of peace, security and stability in the free and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. It was asked whether the views of the two heads of state on the Indo-Pacific region reflect the interests of the United States?

In response, spokesman Matthew Miller said the United States supports peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
