Voting in 88 constituencies in the second phase of India’s Lok Sabha elections ended peacefully. The second phase of voting was held on Friday (April 26) in 13 states and union territories including West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Manipur.

Indian media NDTV reported that 63 percent of the votes were cast in the second phase. West Bengal, Manipur and Assam recorded a record 70 percent voter turnout.

However, two voters and a polling agent died in Kerala due to heatstroke, according to local media. Although the big stars of southern cinema are seen casting their votes despite the scorching heat.

Top leaders of BJP, Congress and Trinamool are busy campaigning in the constituencies of the third phase on the day of the second phase of polling. On this day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an election rally in Malda, West Bengal.

A number of heavyweight candidates are among the candidates contesting the second phase of the polls. They are – Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor and Hema Malini. The third phase of Lok Sabha polls will be held on May 7.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has ordered that there will be no change in the counting process of the Lok Sabha elections. The order was issued on Friday (April 26).

A two-judge bench ruled against the plea to revert to the old ballot system of counting votes, Reuters reported. The court gave such a verdict a few days after the start of the Lok Sabha elections.

Voting for India’s 18th Lok Sabha elections began on April 19. Voting for this seven-phase election will end on June 1.

After the two-judge bench delivered its unanimous verdict, Justice Dipankar Dutta said, “Blind discussion on any aspect of the system would create undue doubt and impede progress.”

“Rather, a constructive approach should be followed through evidence and reasoning to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of the system,” he added.
