Who is the Leader of Opposition in India?

Congress-led coalition ‘India’ has decided to remain in the opposition this time as it did not get a majority in the Indian Lok Sabha elections. The alliance has given up hope of forming a government for the time being. However, they decided to go to the Lok Sabha as a strong opposition party. As a result, the question arises as to who will be the leader of the opposition.

According to party sources, Indian news media NDTV said that the All India meeting was held at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharg’s house on Wednesday (June 5). There was no direct discussion on the election of the leader of the opposition in this meeting. However, many of the party leaders in domestic discussions have given their opinion in favor of making Rahul Gandhi the leader of the opposition.

Before the meeting, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that if India forms a coalition government next time, if Rahul Gandhi agrees to become the prime minister in that government, they will not have any objection.

Party leaders said the Leader of the Opposition has to go to the selection committee meeting for the appointment of CBI chief, Lokpal and Chief Vigilance Commissioner. Chief Justice and Prime Minister also live in these places. As a result, if Rahul Gandhi becomes the leader of the opposition, he can face Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlight his views or objections.

According to another section of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi is not a person who stays in Parliament all day. As a result, it is difficult for him to play the role of the leader of the opposition. He is interested in being active in field politics rather than sitting in parliament. Congress got 47 seats more than last time in this election. However, organizational weaknesses are evident in several places. As a result, it is more practical for him to engage in strengthening the organization in the field.

There was no Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019 elections. At that time, Congress was the largest opposition party, but they did not get the seats to become the leader of the opposition. Because to get a place in the parliament as the leader of the opposition, you have to win 10 percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. As a result, Mallikarjuna was the leader of the opposition in the first term and Adhir Chowdhury in the second term.

Adhir lost this election. Not only him, senior leaders like Digvijoy Singh in Madhya Pradesh, former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel, CP Joshi in Rajasthan and Anand Sharma in Himachal have also lost. As a result, if Rahul Gandhi does not agree, the question remains as to who will be the leader of the Congress alliance India.
