16 Bangladeshis arrested in Assam

Police have arrested 16 Bangladeshi nationals from the northeastern Indian state of Assam on charges of illegally entering the country. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information in a post on social media on Tuesday.

Assam’s local media Sentinel Assam said that the Assam Police have arrested 16 Bangladeshis on charges of entering India by crossing the India-Bangladesh border. Among those arrested are 7 men, 4 women and 5 children.

Assam Police said that the arrested Bangladeshis had gone from Bengaluru to Mankachar in South Salmara via Guwahati in Assam. During police interrogation, they confessed to being Bangladeshi nationals.

In a post on X, the Assam Chief Minister said that the Salmara police of the state conducted a drive and arrested 16 Bangladeshi nationals for illegal entry. They traveled from Bengaluru to Guwahati railway station and reached Mankachar district in South Salmara. Later, the Salmara police arrested them.

He said that the police have confirmed during the investigation that the arrested are Bangladeshi nationals. After interrogation, the Assam Police has started the process of sending the arrested to Bangladesh.

The arrested Bangladeshis are Md. Mehedi Hasan, Chand Mia, Rumana Akhter, Md. Rizwan Howlader, Jamal Sheikh, Beauty Begum, Munni Begum, Nusrat Jahan, Rustom Sheikh, Rubel Qureshi and five children.

Earlier, last week, the Assam Police arrested a Bangladeshi national on charges of illegal entry through the India-Bangladesh border. The Bangladeshi named Asma Akhter was sent back to Bangladesh after being arrested.
