The central government of India has declared a 7-day mourning for the death of former Prime Minister and economist Manmohan Singh. His funeral will be held in New Delhi on Saturday, it is learnt.

This information was reported by the Indian media Hindustan Times in a report on Friday.

The country’s official said that the central government of India has declared a seven-day mourning for the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The cabinet will meet on Friday to pay tribute to the architect of India’s economic reforms.

In addition, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s funeral will be held in New Delhi on Saturday, Congress leader KC Venugopal said. He said that an official statement in this regard will be issued soon.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In addition, former US President Barack Obama, various leaders and citizens of India and the world have expressed grief.

Praising Manmohan Singh’s humble personality and role as a prominent economist, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his (Manmohan’s) wisdom and humility were always visible.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has condoled the death of his “guru and guide”. In a post on social media, Rahul Gandhi said that millions of people will remember former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with great pride. Several other Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have also expressed their condolences on the death of the former Prime Minister.

President of India Droupadi Murmu has said that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will always be remembered for his “service to the nation, his impeccable political life and his utmost humility”. His passing is a great loss for the nation.

All party programmes, including the celebration of the foundation day of the Congress, have been cancelled for the next seven days as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Manmohan Singh was born in Punjab in 1932. He first joined the Indian government in 1971 as the Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. He had been suffering from various physical complications for some time.
